MEDICAL

Click to enlargeTexas Star Labs supplies all the necessary medical records when you pick up your pup. You must know what shots and medications the pup has had and when they were given, otherwise, you and your Vet won't know when the next shots and medications are due. Get recommendations from your vet on the medications. We strongly recommend that you put your pup on a heartworm prevention program. Keep your own records so you know when the next shots and medications are due.  Plan a schedule of shots and medications ahead of time. Sometimes the medication schedule depends on the manufacture of the medication. Sometimes it's the state law. In Texas, Rabies Shots are yearly. For other states, check with your vet or state government. Only a vet can administer a rabies shot. Get a calendar and circle the date your pup was born and use it to write down when the next medications are due. Keep a folder so you don't lose pups records. You can use these pictures as a guideline to create a record and schedule of medications. Click to enlargeClick on the pictures to enlarge them. If you are using Microsoft Excel to make these forms, you can add comments to a cell with a right click over the cell. Then the comment will appear when you hover the pointer over the cell. If a cell has a comment, it has a red triangle in the upper right area of the cell.  I add comments like the manufacture of the shot, or who gave the medication, or anything to help me remember.
The "print date" function (where the 04/05/07 is) is this "=NOW( )".  Don't add the quote marks. So each time you print, you will know when the page was printed. You will want a hard copy every now and then so in case your computer somehow loses the records, you can refer back to the printed copy.

A good item to have is dog toenail clippers. Be sure and be careful not to cut too deep. Keep the styptic powder to stop the bleeding in case you do cut too deep. It happens sometimes as you cut, the dog moves it's foot.

It is a good practice to check your dog's feet after a day in the field and every so often. Clean off the stickers, burrs and look for cuts. Treat with a Neosporin type antibiotic. Take your pet to a Vet if the cut gets infected.
