On this page, we describe how we help our
females deliver puppies, in basic terms. We suggest that you read
books, magazine articles and consult your vet for more information. We
also suggest that you tell your Vet that your female is about to have
puppies in advance so the Vet can give you advice and can help in case
something goes wrong. When do we call the vet? When we see that the
female is under stress for more than an hour and we are unable to help
her, we gather up the puppies and take her to the Vet. Again, your best
advice will come from your vet. The Vet knows your dog.
Helping with the delivery
- Have a place set up to
have the puppies that is easy to clean up
-
Take her temperature every 6-12 hours until you see a 1 to 2
degree drop in temperature. When this happens, get ready, it's
coming within 24 hours.
-
You need to have a blue bulb to suck the fluid out of the pups nose.
This is the same type of bulb that you get when a child is born to
suck the snot out of their nose. You will need plenty of clean towels, formula,
little puppy bottles, dental floss, a watch or a clock, note book, and a
vet on notice, in case there is a problem.
The whelping box
The whelping box needs to
be comfortable for her. She should have plenty of room to move
around . On one of the sides, there should be a lip around 6 inches to
keep the puppies in but allowing your female to go in and out. Also, it
is a good Idea to have a place they can get under so that the mother can't
crush them, but she can grab them if she wants.
Taking her temperature
Get an electronic
thermometer. Write "DOG ONLY" on it with a permanent marker.
This will warn people not to use it. Use lubrication like KY
jelly or some other water base lube. Put the lube on the thermometer.
Start the thermometer. Slowly insert it in the female's anus. When it
beeps, take it out . Follow the thermometer's instructions. Temp
should be around 101. When the temp drops 1 - 2 degrees from her
normal temp then the puppies should arrive in 24 hours.
Taking over if the your female does not seem to know what to do
When the pup is born, you
the mother should lick the membrane off and chew the cord in half. She
then licks the pup to clean it and to get it to start breathing. She
will grab and move the puppy sometimes until she hears it yelping. If
she fails to do any of this, then you must help. Rub the
pup down with a clean dry towel. Do this roughly to get the
blood circulating. Then take the blue bulb and suck fluids out of the
mouth and nose of the pup. Tie a piece of thread about a inch from the
pups stomach around the umbilical cord. Then take scissors and cut the
umbilical cord about the thread. Then I would get them up in the back
and pinch a little to get a good yelp. After that you have delivered
your first pup and didn't even need a white coat. Speaking of a white
coat, wear old clothes because your clothes can get really nasty.
